Scopriamo il piazzamento di un modello sul tessuto!

Ciao! Cosa ne dici se oggi ci concentriamo sulla tecnica del piazzamento? Hello there! How about today we talk pattern placement?

Qualche mese fa, nei miei giri per acquistare stoffe, mi sono imbattuta in questo jersey verde smeraldo e, noncurante del piazzamento della sua fantasia, ne ho acquistato 2 metri. E nì, sapevo che avrei voluto un vestito, ma la forma non era ancora ben definita in testa.

A few months ago, while I was fabric shopping ( as you do!), I stumbled upon this emerald green jersey and unconcerned by its design placement, I bought 2 meters of it. I mean, I knew I wanted a dress, but the shape was still not in my mind.

Di arrivo a casa, l’illuminazione mi coglie come un’epifania: il centro della stoffa era tinta unita e i bordi presentavano la fantasia fiorata che andava ad intersecarsi verso l’interno.

Back home AND, EPIPHANY: the center of the fabric was solid and the borders were full of flowers. Meaning just one thing: you didn’t look as carefully as you should have done.

Bene. Anche se forse non benissimo. Oh well.

Però, ehi, quello c’era e il motto è:

Fai il meglio che puoi con ciò che hai.

Then my motto came out: Do the best with what you have.

Mi son detta che questa poteva essere l’occasione perfetta per giocare con il piazzamento del modello sul tessuto e creare da questa mia “disavventura” un momento di apprendimento per tutt*! E per coronare il tutto ho scelto la classica forma dello skater dress per complicare il tutto al massimo e trarne il massimo apprendimento.

I said to myself this could be the perfect occasion to transform this misadventure into a learning experience! Choosing a skater dress shape was just the right thing to do!

Lo skater dress è formato da una gonna mezza ruota e un corpino non sagomato con o senza maniche (io qui le ho messe) e uno scollo morbido.

A skater dress is a dress formed by a half-circle skirt, a bodice, sleeves or sleeveless, and a rounded neckline.

I pezzi che compongono il modello sono i seguenti – ho omesso sia la striscia dello scollo, poichè quella è facilmente piazzabile nei ritagli di tessuto che il dritto filo poichè l’ho adattato ai pezzi (la gonna ha il dritto filo a seconda di come la piazzi mentre gli altri pezzi hanno il dritto filo centrale.).

The pattern pieces are as following – keep in mind I have omitted both the neckline band, cause it can easily be placed in any part of the fabric and the grainline because I’ve decided to adapt it to the pattern pieces (the skirt grain line depends on how you place it and the other pattern pieces have a central grainline.)

Andiamo per gradi: cos’è un piazzamento? Baby steps: what’s pattern placement?

Il piazzamento è lo studio che c’è in fase di taglio del modello per far sì che il tessuto sia:

• sfruttato al massimo (cioè il modello deve occupare meno spazio possibile per permettere di tagliare più taglie dello stesso) oppure
• posizionato in un determinata area del modello per sfruttare al meglio la fantasia che presenta.

Pattern placement is the study you have/need to do before cutting fabric in order to:

• use as less fabric as possible to cut the most out of it (this applies in the fashion industry where all costs are highly planned) or
• use the design of the fabric strategically placed in a very specific area of the garment.

In questo caso specifico, il tessuto è stato sfruttato per la fantasia che presenta, non per il suo consumo.

In this case, specifically, the fabric was used for its design and making the most out of it.

Analizziamo il tessuto: ho creato queste info grafiche per far capire al meglio come funziona il piazzamento, poichè qua quello che sposta l’ago della bilancia qua è la forma della gonna a mezza ruota e il suo dritto filo.

Let’s analyze the fabric: I’ve created those few infographics to let you understand better how pattern placement works. In this case what dictates the rules is the half-circle skirt and its grain.

Partiamo da un presupposto: quando si ha una stoffa particolare piazzare il modello ha un’importanza fondamentale.

Buona parte della meraviglia di un capo che vediamo è data dall’utilizzo della fantasia di una stoffa e cambiando gli addendi, come in matematica, a volte si modifica il risultato e anche di tanto.

First things first: when you have a very peculiar fabric, pattern placement is fundamental. The magic a garment communicates you is due to its placement and no, if you change its placement, the result will not be the same.

Prima opzione: gonna mezza ruota posizionata nel centro, corpino posizionato nel centro, maniche posizionate sula fantasia esterna.

First option: half-circle skirt placed in the center, bodice placed in the center, and sleeves placed on the flower design.

Seconda opzione: gonna mezza ruota sempre posizionata nel centro, maniche posizionate nel centro e corpino posizionato sulla fantasia esterna.

Second option: half-circle skirt placed in the center, sleeves placed in the center, and bodice placed on the flower design.

Terza opzione: gonna mezza ruota posizionata metà sul centro e metà sulla fantasia facendo combaciare la fantasia sullo stesso lato, corpino posizionato metà sul centro e metà sulla fantasia facendo combaciare la fantasia sullo stesso lato e maniche una solo sulla fantasia e l’altra solo sulla tinta unita. La manica con la fantasia sarà da abbinare al lato del corpino che avrà anch’esso la fantasia.

Third option: half-circle skirt placed both on the flower design and the center of the fabric, the bodice placed both on the flower design and the center part and the sleeves placed one on the flower design and the other one on the center. The sides of the skirt, bodice, and sleeve need to be on the same pattern, i.e. right side all plain fabric and left side all flower design.

Io ho scelto la terza opzione, per dare più movimento ad un vestito che di per sè ha una forma molto semplice e renderlo più appetibile anche ad un occhio non esperto.

I decided to go for the third option, to give the dress a more interesting look as the pattern itself is pretty easy.

E dopo tutta questa tecnica: IO ADORO QUESTO VESTITO!!!

And after all these technical details, I can say it out loud: I LOVE THIS DRESS!!!
